St. Anne's Hill Historic District in Dayton
St. Anne's Hill Historic District is a residential area of the city of Dayton Ohio. It is located right next to the central business district in Dayton. The area has some of the most impressive historic properties in the city of Dayton and is one of the longest-standing residential areas of Dayton. Other neighboring areas include the Oregon Historic District and the Huffman Historic District. It is a desirable area of Dayton to live in for its iconic wide tree-lined streets and proximity to area businesses. The district is almost 100% residential with a small strip of commercial properties on Fifth Street central to the neighborhood.
History of the St. Anne's Hill Historic District
This is the second oldest residential neighborhood in Dayton. The area was designated as a historic district in 1974 with a spot in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The first records of the area date back to 1815 when Daniel C. Cooper plotted out the original plots of the City of Dayton. The neighborhood was not inhabited until the 1830s as farmsteads were built. The first home was built by a Swiss immigrant and botanist Eugene Dutoit. It was a farm mansion that sat on 111 acres. His home still stands and is one of the oldest in Dayton.
As more immigrants came to settle in Ohio and the Dayton area 1845 brought a large influx of German immigrants to the area and many more homes were built in the St. Anne's Hill neighborhood. From the 1860s to 1890s development increased greatly to provide housing for the increasing German-immigrant population. When the great flood swept through Dayton in 1913 the hill was spared from the damages and many homes became havens for others who lost their homes. This is a big reason why the historic properties built before the flood still stand today. During the 1930s a big population influx happened in the neighborhood and many homes were divided up into rental units. By the 1970s these rental homes were experiencing neglect and several were being torn down to make way for newer rental properties. During this time the historic preservation society fought to keep the historic homes and it resulted in the neighborhood earning a historic district distinction and later a place on the national register.
