McPherson Town Historic District Ohio

The McPherson Town Historic District is a neighborhood in the city of Dayton Ohio. It is located just across the Great Miami River from the downtown area of Dayton. It has one of the most desirable locations in Dayton and is bounded by the Great Miami River and Interstate 75. Other nearby neighborhoods include many of the area's other historic districts such as Steeles Hill Grafton Hill Historic District, Central Avenue Historic District, E. 2nd St. Historic District, and Dayton Motor Car Company Historic District.

The McPherson Town Historic District offers a dense urban living style conveniently located just minutes from downtown Dayton. The median home value is $163,613 and the median rent value is $578. The History of McPherson Town Historic District Dayton

McPherson town historic District is recognized as Dayton's first official suburb. The town received its first declaration as a historic district in 1977 and the McPherson Town Historic Society was founded in 1978.

The area got its start on February 1, 1845. This was the day that an Irishman by the name of Samuel McPherson filed for a plat that was made up of 34 swampy and wooded lots along both sides of Covington Turnpike known as Main Street and Dayton. The center of Samuel Mcpherson's plat is located at today's intersection of N. Main St. and McPherson Street.

When McPherson first came to this area there were not many Dayton residents rushing out to settle into the area north of the Great Miami River. Dayton was still a developing community struggling to you carve its name out of the wilderness and establish itself. There was also no direct access to the area across the river from Dayton. To get across the river at the time residents needed to Wade through the water or hop on a ferry.

In 1871 Henry Hermann and EW Davis filed for the development of a subdivision in McPherson Town just west of Main and North of Riverview to Herman Avenue which today is Grand Avenue. With the attraction of the new development along with steps taken to eliminate flooding issues many of Dayton's middle-class citizens began to move into the neighborhood. At that time many Queen Anne and Eastlake-style homes began to pop up in the area.

The neighborhood saw devastation with significant flooding in 1897 and 1913 leaving many of the homes badly damaged. But in World War II the demographic of the middle class changed and it brought many more middle-class citizens of affluence to Dayton suburbs and away from the inner city.

As more people moved into the area some of the historic charms of the original neighborhood began to wane. But in the 1970s Phil Lehman, Tom Gabriel, and several helpers recognize the historic beauty in some of the old homes that still remained and began to renovate and restore them. In 1993 the McPherson Town Historic District benefited from an initiative called Rehabarama where many community volunteers helped to restore the neighborhood to its historic glory.
