Jefferson Township Near Dayton Ohio

Jefferson Township is located just northeast of the city of Dayton Ohio and is considered a suburb of Dayton. It is one of nine townships in Montgomery County Ohio. It is located in the central area of the county. There are many smaller cities located within the Jefferson Township boundaries including Moraine in the eastern portion West Carrollton in the southeastern portion and Drexel in the northeast. New Chicago is officially unincorporated but it is also located in the eastern portion of the township.

The population of Jefferson Township is just under 7,000. The median home value is $95,600 and the median rent price is $701. A majority of residents in the area own their homes. About 79% of people own their homes. Jefferson Township offers a rural and relaxed feel as compared to the more densely urban area of Dayton. 

What is a Township?

A civil Township is a unit of local government in the country that is subordinate to the county in that which it is located. The responsibilities of the government within the township vary on the autonomy that is set up in the state in which the township resides. Jefferson Township is governed by a three-member board of trustees that are elected in November of odd-numbered years. These three trustees serve a term of four years that begins the following January after they are officially elected. In addition to these three officers is an elected Township fiscal officer that serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 after the election.

It can get confusing as there are 24 different Jefferson Townships across the state of Ohio. The one just outside of Dayton near Montgomery was once part of the German Township and became its own Township on June 10 of 1805. The area thrived in commerce with three gristmill mills.
