Huffman Historic District Dayton Ohio
Huffman historic district is located in Eastern Dayton Ohio and is one of 10 recognized historic neighborhoods in the city. It is well known for its diversity in residents of all walks of life. This historic district is just south of Harrison and Riverside and just east of Beaver Creek and North of Oakwood. And nicely located just 1 mile east of the downtown hub of Dayton.
The History of the Huffman Historic District
From its beginning, this neighborhood of Dayton was focused on being tight-knit and bringing together people of all social and economic backgrounds. William P Hoffman the founder of the neighborhood had intentions of putting together an economically diverse and tight-knit community that included social luminaries and city leaders all living in the same neighborhood. This community dates back to the late 1800s and was constructed on rural land that Huffman owned just outside of what was then the Dayton city limits.
Today the community retains much of its original architectural charm and several of the homes have been lovingly restored while some still await the same care. This neighborhood is listed on the national register of historic places. It is well known for its collection of Victorian and Queen Ann mansions beside smaller simple classic homes of the time.
The Neighborhood Association
The historic Huffman neighborhood has an active neighborhood association which is a great way for neighbors to jump in and get to know those who have community pride and are dedicated to making the Huffman Historic District a continued place for people to come together with a beautiful and well cared for atmosphere.
The association also hosts several community activities to help bring residents together including home tours, Christmas caroling, summer picnics, and many informal open house gatherings. There is a membership fee and membership is open to anyone who lives in the historic district. The fee is $10 per household per year. It is a very worthwhile investment to get to know your neighbors in the community. Association meetings are once a month on the first Monday of every month at Saint Paul Church on the corner of E. 4th St. and Huffman Avenue.
