The Columbus region is the 15th largest city in the nation. It is made up of eight counties that include 86 cities and villages and is home to 1.7 million people. The region has grown 22 percent since 1990, making it one of the fastest growing metro areas in the Midwest. Over that period, the region’s populations has grown nearly four times faster than Ohio overall. In addition, the growth of the workforce is outpacing that of the population. New businesses are on the rise. Fifty-three thousand new businesses opened their doors in the Columbus metro area in 2004, more than a 36 percent increase over 1990. 

Columbus is a region rich with business. Cardinal Health, Nationwide Insurance, American Electric Power, Limited Brands and Big Lots Incorporated, collectively pump billions of dollars into the economy. Other companies of great merit are Honda of America and Scotts Miracle-Gro located in Marysville and Wendy’s International in Dublin. These, plus hundreds of the Midwest’s innovative and entrepreneurial small businesses, provide a vibrant and diverse business community for Central Ohio.
